MadWorld: Mani’s Verdict

!WARNING: MADWORLD IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!

Madworld is shockingly violent – But more so the nature of the act of killing seems to be the thing that makes it stand out. You kill enemies in the most gruesome of ways – and the blood curdling screams of the soon to be dead definitely resonates in the back of your head. But the amount of blood on the screen is so over the top and the blood is such a BRIGHT red that the violence is extremely comical much like too much gore in a horror movie. If the game did have realistic graphics – the amount of blood on screen would have to be lowered considerably or the contrast of realism and over the top violence will be jarring to the player. For example Gears of Wars plentiful blood streams make the violence less striking and the crimson red blood makes the chainsaw kills far less shocking or cringe worthy than those in Madworld.

Madworld’s Black and White aesthetic makes the red blood contrast highly. So when the blood is seen it is highlighted and stays in the memory far more than the bland backdrop for the blood in Gears or HOTD.

Madworld is more about bold, artistic imagery and ones that our minds can easily re create in our heads. It stays with you for much longer – but your brain disconnects it with reality fairly quickly. And like a Tarantino movie – you credit the creators bold direction and not the killers violent act.

The Wii controls make this game far more visceral than most brawlers. Sweeping vertically and horizontally with chainsaw revved up in hand makes you feel like a god….You cut through things like a knife through butter. Able to lay waste to multiple opponents not in a matter of seconds – but in a matter of one. To be honest – there is going to be people who will not like this game who want to. A mate of mine decided to try it after thinking the trailers and footage online looked awesome. Once the wiimote was in hand however and he was picking up a guy and swinging him back and forth on and off a bed of spikes (Rose Bush) he said “This is horrible, how can you play this game!?” and immediately stopped playing it – handing me back the controls – to do the same thing without a single bit of remorse.

You get used to the violence in madworld just like any other game – but now and again it will hit you. And then you might need to put the game down for 30 mins or so. But you will keep coming back because the game is just so much fun….I don’t want to over hype the game – as just like No More Heroes it is defintely not everyones cup of tea…It also gets quite tough and sometimes levels have to be played over and over if you keep dieing when you get to the boss stage. But If you are 18 and love the Idea of foul mouthed commentators talking about everything from nutsacks, prostitution, Mofos and other crude and – tbh disgusting and shocking stuff that you have never heard in a videogame -ever – all while you run around sawing people in half – Then definitely give Madworld a try.

Graphically the level of detail here is up there with games on the HD consoles – the black and white is used phenomenally well. I compare it to Mario 64 in that with that game Nintendo nailed 3D platforming first time – here Platinum has come up with a style that they can call their own and from what’s on display looks like they have been using this aestethic for years and years.

Madwold is not the deepest game in the world – and from what I have heard no where near the longest. All high score junkies be prepared to do the same thing over and over again – stun guy – find lampost/trumpet etc – shove it through his eye – pick up barrel/tyre – find same enemy – shove the barrel/tyre over him – pick him up again and throw him into rose bush/fishtank/fire/exploding barrel etc. The formula is fairly simple – but more often than not you will be doing so with a big smile on your face :) – Seems like Nintendo isn’t the only one with that motto eh? ;)

WARNING: Don’t copy what you see in Madworld – Don’t even think about it……Theres no way in hell you could pull a street sign from out of the ground anyway….Let alone shove it through someones eye.
