Tragic TGS
This year’s TGS was my fifth one and I always look forward to it, checking out what is expected to be shown, whether it’s just a preview video or playable at the many booths. I usually go in with a plan of what I want to see, so that I don’t waste too much time wandering aimlessly.
This year I had wanted to take some videos and try to put together a 20 minute slot we might upload to the YouTube channel. I thought it might make an interesting way to give our listeners a better idea of what the show is like on the days which are open to the public, and of the general atmosphere of the show in general.
I’d worked out what I wanted to include roughly in my head before typing up what shots I would need, and what topics I’d discuss etc. I borrowed a camcorder from a friend, got my camera together and set off at 6am, not wanting to miss out on Monster Hunter 3, which, along with Oboro Muramasa, and Let’s Tap, was on my ‘must play’ list.
By the time I left the exhibition centre, my plans lay in tatters, as a result of bad luck, incompetence, and over ambitiousness. No prizes for guessing that the second one was the main cause. I came home with mixed feeling of having played, or seen what I wanted to do, but with little or nothing that would be worth making into any kind of video podcast.
Trying to be a journalist/cameraman and a gamer at the same event is difficult enough when you are nowhere near being the first two, and barely achieving mediocrity at the other. Add to this, the thousand or so other attendees, overzealous crowd controllers, and spiky haired, sword wielding cosplayers and you’ve got a recipe for ‘epic’ failure.
I’m glad I went, as I always am. Oboro Muramasa and Let’s Tap are very much definite buys. I love to soak up the atmosphere, watch the games (and the people) in action, and play the titles I really want to try out. My only regret is that I couldn’t bring something back with me other than an hour of footage of the inside of my backpack, a flat camcorder battery, and memories of a 3 hour+ queue for Monster Hunter 3.
