Christmas. Time for food, family, togetherness, and most importantly, gran playing Wii Sports Boxing. Yes it’s that time of year again where you should be prodding/hinting/harassing those close to you for the latest games, or perhaps some that you may have simply forgotten about during the year. This extensive list should help you decide which to ask for, or buy for others. Remember just 67 days til Christmas; start panicking now.

Action / AdventureOverlord

What do you get when you take a pinch of Terry Pratchett, a splash of Pikmin and a handful of pure evil? Overlord: Dark Legend (Climax Studios / £14 / mymemory.co.uk) is the prequel to the Overlord game on the 360 and PS3. The premise is similar: you a control an Overlord (think Ganondorf with a sense of humour and you’re half way there) which has control of minions who have different colours based on their different abilities, your goal being to RM9PGMachieve ultimate reign by crushing everything in your path.

Two chibi-adventures arrived for the Wii, the first of which was Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars (Red Fly/ £11 / mymemory.co.uk). Here you controlled Pax, a mushroom trying to find his way amongst his fungus fellows, fighting off much larger rabbits, spiders, and um, dragonflies. Secondly, Deadly Creatures (Rainbow Studios / £12 / gameplay.co.uk) saw you play as either a scorpion or aRDCP78 tarantula, the latter of which being more stealth-oriented. The game saw you taking on deadlier upon deadlier creatures until eventually coming across the deadliest demon of them all…

Not released yet in Europe due Sony Europe buying the licence just one month before the intended release, Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Terminal Reality / Preorder / £27 / argos.co.uk) will finally be released on theRGQE70 Wii in late October, just in time for Hallowe’en. Fans of the franchise will adore this iteration, as I am sure you are no doubt aware, stars the original cast, including Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. The game takes place from the ‘newbie’ role in the team, catching ghosts with the help of the original characters, and looks to be one licenced game to keep an eye on. Read more »

On The Shelf – 21/08/09

You may remember the last time we spoke my joyous attitude as we finally had games being released (and interesting ones to boot!). Well unfortunately, we are back to the usual dry gulch summer, with those games a few weeks ago having evaporated like the last few drops of water struggling to survive in the overwhelming heat of the summer sun. But fear not my fellow adventurers! September is on the horizon and it bring glorious clouds filled with rain to pour great gaming goodness down upon the earth and quench our parched thirst before downing us in that sea of playable delight known only as the holiday season.

Until that fabled day arrives, why not recount stories of the days of your youth; of Mario, Link, Samus and Bulbasaur. Those classic games that filled your hearts with a warm fuzzy feeling and could make life flourish on any arid landscape. Or perhaps you are more adventurous and wish to venture into that cave known as Downloadable Games in search of this weeks wonders of Bit.Trip Core, Pilotwings, Pop Plus Solo and Mario Vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again.

Whatever path you choose keep heading onwards adventurers and soon you will find the releases you have been searching for.

On The Shelf 07/08/09

Those of you who have already hit the jump may have noticed something strange this week. While we have been looking at a meager five or so games a week, this week somebodies obviously noticed the lack of products as we have 15 titles breaking into the summer slump.

While most are still not going to catch the eye of many gamers (much of this weeks releases seem to be targeted at the under seven market as well as the usual forgettable summer movie tie-in game), there are one or two that may catch your eye.

First up on DS we have Active Health With Carol Vorderman. While it may have the celebrity endorsement slapped on the front and quite a garish box that may turn away some when they see it on the shelf, if you look a little deaper you will find an assortment of health tools from Nintendo. Included in the package is an Activity Meter for keeping track of your daily steps (like Walk With Me), a handful of health recipies (much like Cooking Guide), tools to track your changing weight (ala Wii Fit) and other tools such as recoding meals and a calorie dictionary. This interesting mix of a little bit of everything from Nintendo’s health and fitness range is sure to please those looking for a broad range of activities to help promote an active lifestyle and is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Over on Wii this week brings a sporting title many have been asking after since the Wii’s release, Cricket. Released to coincide with legendary event of the same name, Ashes Cricket 2009 promises to deliver all the skill and technical elements of the sport as well as a host of famous faces and pitches. Unfortunately not much is known about this one, so you may want to hold off for the reviews before parting with your cash.

On The Shelf – 24/07/09

The slow summer of gaming continues, but for this week Nintendo provides us a cool breeze with Wii Sports Resort for Wii. Nintendos MotionPlus showcase and sequel to the original Wii game has finally arrived showcasing 12 categories of sports to dive into.  Games such as Swordfighting, Air Sports, Table Tennis and Archery will surely provide owners with plenty of entertainment, and although there are a few titles that let the side down (I’m looking at you Wakeboarding), most players should find this grea fun as well as a great way of getting their hands on Wii MotionPlus.

On The Shelf – 17/07/09

It’s the time of the week again when we take a look at what is coming out, although there really isn’t that much to talk about i’m afraid. Just five games are heading to Nintendo consoles this week (three Wii & two DS), and there is nothing I can particularly recommend.

On the plus side we are just one week away from diving into what will surely be a summer sensation with Wii Sports Resort and we have Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord (FFCCMLAADL) coming out on WiiWare this week. As for you DS fans, why not check last weeks release of Art Style: Boxlife on DSiWare? At 500 points this one is an absolute steal.

That’s all from us for this week Im afraid, time to work on getting though this backlog of games!

On The Shelf – 08/07/09

Welcome back to On The Shelf after our brief hiatus. We are well into the summer drought with just five games released on Wii & DS this week. Luckily one of them is worth a look but expect releases few and far over the next month or two, with quality titles even rarer.

This weeks one to watch has to be The Conduit for the Wii. You would have to be deaf not to have heard the guys go on about this for the last year and after several delays it is finally here this Friday. This graphically gorgeous first person shooter sees you hunting down an alien invasion and uncovering a government conspiracy in the progress. The game has been getting mixed reviews, although mainly positive, citing the games story mode as rather week but that the game comes into it’s own once you start playing the online mode.

There isn’t much to look forward to on the DS this week, so why not take a look at the systems extensive back catalogue of classics?

In The Fridge – 26/06/09

This weeks Virtual Console releases brings Will Wright’s SimEarth: The Living Planet to the console. As expected from any Sim game you will need plenty of management skills to keep everything in order as you try and sustain an entire planet. Unfortunately if your not used to the almost overwhelming options of the Sim titles (especially the older ones) and the need to keep everything in perfect balance, this one might be too overwhelming. However, if your a serial Sim and know what your getting into then you are in for a rich, fun experience.

Also on Virtual Console comes the arcade rendition of SEGA’s Altered Beast. This classic sidescrolling beat-em-up seems you taking the role of a man-wolf-dragon-tiger-bear thing taking down various baddies as you struggle to save Athena. The game has a cult status and will provide fun for those looking for a nostalgic experience, but we warned, it hasn’t preserved as well as a jar of pickles. Wise Fwom Your Gwave!

Over on WiiWare, Water Warfare is the latest brainchild from the makers of Onslaught, but when it comes to sugary coating, both are very different flavours. Instead of blasting space marines and alien bugs, Water Warfare puts you in a bright world stocked with super soakers. The game offers a wide variety of maps, modes, missions, weapons and character customisation. If single player isn’t enough for you though then why not head online for an eight player deathmatch… or should that be splashmatch? As well as being bigger and better than it’s older brother, it’s also 200 points cheaper at a nice 800 point price tag. If you can get past the sweet sugary coating then you are in for a treat!

Puzzle Bobble (sometimes known as Bust A Move) is one of the few puzzle games that can truly be called a gaming institution, often imitated but never beaten. Puzzle Bobble Plus joins it’s cousin Bubble Bobble Plus in offering the retro goodness we all grew up with with some modern flares thrown in. Expect plenty of content to work through, an fun two player mode to challenge your friend and if you manage to get through to the end then downloadable content packs offer you the chance to buy more level sets.

Over On DSiWare, Sudoku 50! For Beginners is exactly what it says on the tin. This package offers 50 Sudoku puzzles ideal for those getting into the game. Much like Sudoku 150! For Challengers released a few weeks ago, the game has a nice clean interface, and supports handwriting recognition as well as touch input. For those looking for more of a challenge, why not try Sudoku 150! or wait for A Little Bit Of… Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: Sudoku Edition which will also contain a Brain Age check mode.
